COMMERCIAL
Yahoo
Largest Interent Directory composed of an alphabetical list of 14 broad subject areas,
which are then subdivided into smaller categories. Users can browse the hierarchical
structure or use a search engine that searches the URLs, titles, and comments within
Yahoo. Yahoo catalogs sites manually, with annotations provided by the authors for their
own web sites. There are no ratings of sites except for a pair of sun glasses to indicate
a site worth noting.
Magellan
Magellan is a Internet directory; sites are browable by topic and sub-topic. It is
possible to search the entire directory or reviewed and rated sites. Magellan also
has green light sites which are free of adult content.
Galaxy
Galaxy is a searchable directory of web sites. There are no annotations or ratings of the
web sites they have chosen to include.
Mining Company
A well-organized collection of reviewd and annotated
websites organized by topic.
Looksmart
A searchable directory of reviewed sites in
24,000+ categories, also with the optino to search AltaVista.
Netcenter
Netscape's search site with a concentration on business sites and some free user services.
Open Directory
A resource collection compiled by volunteer editors and owned by Netscape.
snap.com
A searchable directory of web sites. This is a joint venture between CNet and NBC.
Lycos Top 5%
Lycos Top 5% is one of the easiest search tools to
navigate and one of the most valuable for locating quality sites. Over 10,000 reviews
of the best Web sites, as evaluated by Lycos, are rated on a scale of 1-50 according
to Content, Presentation and Experience.
Go Network
A joint project of Infoseek and Disney, presenting a directory along with news,
personalization and other services.
ACADEMIC
Argus Clearinghouse
The Argus Clearinghouse in Michigan is a collection
of links to the best databases and sites on the Internet. There are 12 main
categories. Websites are reviewed, annotated and rated. Ratings are on a
five-point scale for Resource Description: Resource Evaluation, Design, Organization, and
Guide Meta-information.
Britannica Internet Guide
A guide to over 125,000 selected and reviewed web sites with
excellent descriptions of the sites. The Guide is maintained by Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Rating are: (1 star = recommended; 2 stars = exceptional; 3 stars = best of web).
BUBL 5:15
A searchable directory of web sites prepared by the University of Strathclyde Library in
Glasgow. This directory is browsable by subject or by Dewey classification number. This
directory sometimes takes a little longer to access--probably because the server is
halfway around the world.
The Librarians' Index to the Internet
Annotated directory of quality web sites on a wide variety of
subjects. There are a few PG-13 sites included. This directory has been designed to meet
the needs of public library patrons.
Internet Public Library
Each item in the IPL collections has been carefully selected, cataloged and described by a
member of the IPL staff, many of whom are librarians. This means that you can be assured
of the quality of the resources that you will find within the IPL.
Scout Report Signpost
The Scout Report consists of over 4,100 of the best
Internet resources chosen by the Scout Report editorial staff. The sites are
cataloged and organized by Library of Congress classification and searchable by keyword.
WWW Virtual Library
The WWW Virtual Library is a collection of subject
guides on several hundred subjects. By selecting a category, you access a page of
Web links pertaining to that subject with a brief description of the Web site and with
recommended and new sites indicated.

A collection of guides created by librarians.
INFOMINE
A large collection of scholarly Interent resources from the University of California.
University of Delaware
An extensive collection of subject pages from the University of Delaware Library.
AltaVista
AltaVista gives you access to the largest Web index: over 250 million pages, and six
million articles from 50,000 Usenet newsgroups. But because of the massive number of pages
that it indexes and its full text search, you may be overwhelmed with hundreds or
thousands of irrelevant results. You will benefit most if you search for relatively
obscure topics, use the advanced search, carefully choose your search terms, and use
Boolean operators (AND, OR, AND NOT, NEAR).
Hotbot
HotBot claims to have indexed every word of 110 million documents.
It is possible to search the web or usenet newsgroups. The expert option allows searches
by date, location, or media type (image, text, sound, etc.).
Excite
Excite indexes 60 million web pages. It offers two search options - Simple and Power.
Simple is relatively simple although it is a good idea to read the search tips before
beginning a search. Power Search gives you the option of searching the web, reviewed web
sites, current news, or non-US versions of Excite. Power Search also has options for
including and excluding search terms.
Lycos
Lycos indexes 50 million web pages. The basic Lycos site offers a
subject directory, news, stocks, shopping, and so on. Lycos Pro Search which allows
you to specify a large number of search options.
Infoseek
Infoseek indexes 100 million web pages. It offers a subject directory of web sites, a
search engine, and a search site for news, business information, images, phones numbers,
and email addresses. If your search returns far too many results, you may narrow it down
by using of the option of "searching within these pages". Although not quite as
large as AltaVista, Infoseek generally yields much more relevant results, with the most
pertinent results appearing on the first page.
Webcrawler
Webcrawler indexes 2 million web pages. It has both simple and advanced search options. It
also has an advanced option. Results can be displayed as either titles or summaries.
Northern Light
Northern Light indexes 100 million web pages. Search both world wide pages and special
collections of magazines and other materials (you must pay for some of these). Northern
Light is especially good when looking for academic information. Results are organized into
folders based on subject. With the power search option, you may search by date or by
source, but it does ot support complex Boolean searches.
Google
A search engine that ranks pages by the number of links from pages ranked high by the
service.
Electric Monk
This search engine asks questions in plain English and retrieves up to 50 results in
relevancy ranked order; uses the Lycos search engine database.
GoTo
A search engine that displays results according to competitive bidding, user evaluations,
and typical retrieval processing.
Dogpile
Search the web, usenet newsgroups, FTP sites, business news, stock
quotes, weather and newswires. Results are returned rapidly, but are not combined. Their
Metafind uses six search engines (web pages only) and combines the search results and
sorts them by search engine, domain, alphabetically, or by keyword.
SavvySearch
Savvy Search is one the two best multisearch engines
on the Internet. It searches nineteen search engines simultaneously (AltaVista, Excite,
HotBot, Lycos, Webcrawler, Infoseek, and others) and reveals the results in order of
relevance, indicating which search engines contained which listings. You can also
remove duplicated sites and get a summary of each of the hits.
Metacrawler
MetaCrawler uses 7 search engines and the results of all the search
engines are combined. It collates results, eliminates duplication, scores the results and
provides the user with a comprehensive list of relevant sites.
Inference Find
Inference Find submits searches in parallel to Web Crawler,Alta
Vista, Yahoo, Lycos, InfoSeek, and Excite. The search results are merged, the duplicates
are removed, and the results are arranged into groups of similar subjects.
MetaFind
A metasearch engine that allows you to sort your results by domain.

Highway 61 send your search to 5 search engines (Yahoo, Lycos,
Infoseek, Web Crawler,
and Excite) and compiles the results into a single page. References are listed in order of
relevance and indicates the search engine from which the reference was retrieved. There
are Boolean AND and OR search options.

Disney Internet Guide
A family friendly guide. This site combines a search engine with a
subject directory of reviewed web sites.
Ask Jeeves for Kids
Ask Jeeves a question in plain English and you will receive a reply
from either Jeeves' list of human selected sites or from a metasearch of several of the
major search engines. Ask Jeeves for Kids is a fun place to visit, but lacks the relevance
and precision needed by the serious searcher.
Kids Click
A searchable subject guide to the Internet for young people. This
site has been prepared by librarians of the Ramapo Catskill library as a guide to age
appropriate web sites.
OneKey
OneKey provides the largest database of kid safe sites. With a
resource library that has the best that the Net has to offer in over 500 categories,
OneKey is the best starting point for users that are tired of looking for information on
their own.
