Search Indexes

AltaVista
AltaVista gives you access to the largest Web index: over 250 million pages, and six million articles from 50,000 Usenet newsgroups. But because of the massive number of pages that it indexes and its full text search, you may be overwhelmed with hundreds or thousands of irrelevant results. You will benefit most if you search for relatively obscure topics, use the advanced search, carefully choose your search terms, and use Boolean operators (AND, OR, AND NOT, NEAR).

Hotbot
HotBot claims to have indexed every word of 110 million documents. It is possible to search the web or usenet newsgroups. The expert option allows searches by date, location, or media type (image, text, sound, etc.).

Excite
Excite indexes 60 million web pages. It offers two search options - Simple and Power. Simple is relatively simple although it is a good idea to read the search tips before beginning a search. Power Search gives you the option of searching the web, reviewed web sites, current news, or non-US versions of Excite.  Power Search also has options for including and excluding search terms.

Lycos
Lycos indexes 50 million web pages. The basic Lycos site offers a subject directory, news, stocks, shopping, and so on.  Lycos Pro Search which allows you to specify a large number of search options.

Infoseek
Infoseek indexes 100 million web pages. It offers a subject directory of web sites, a search engine, and a search site for news, business information, images, phones numbers, and email addresses. If your search returns far too many results, you may narrow it down by using of the option of "searching within these pages". Although not quite as large as AltaVista, Infoseek generally yields much more relevant results, with the most pertinent results appearing on the first page.

Webcrawler
Webcrawler indexes 2 million web pages. It has both simple and advanced search options. It also has an advanced option.  Results can be displayed as either titles or summaries.

Northern Light
Northern Light indexes 100 million web pages. Search both world wide pages and special
collections of magazines and other materials (you must pay for some of these). Northern Light is especially good when looking for academic information. Results are organized into folders based on subject. With the power search option, you may search by date or by source, but it does ot support complex Boolean searches.

SavvySearch
Savvy Search is one the two best multisearch engines on the Internet. It searches nineteen search engines simultaneously (AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, Webcrawler, Infoseek, and others) and  reveals the results in order of   relevance, indicating which search engines contained which listings.
